Sierra Leone First Lady arrives in Abuja to attend a high-level conference to tackle cancer in Africa

The First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, and delegation on Wednesday 15th May, 2024, arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, to participate in a high-level seminar for First Ladies of Africa on cancer.

The conference is organized by the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The conference commences on Thursday and ends on Friday, 17th May, 2024.

The First Ladies in Africa are taking collective action to tackle cancer in Africa, which, according to WHO, has been on the increase over the past few decades.

The theme of the conference is “Innovative approaches to cancer prevention and early detection.

The two days conference, will discuss among others, the role of Government Policies in Cancer Control, Sub-regional initiatives to promote effective cancer control and prevention, strategies for engaging Communities in Cancer Awareness and Advocacy, including innovations in Cancer Screening Technologies,
advocacy in exploring emerging technologies and innovations in cancer screening methods suitable for resource-constrained settings in OIC African Member States.

The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Her Excellency Oluremi Tinubu is hosting the conference at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

Other international organizations like the World Health Organization and Africa Development Bank, including the Federal Ministry of Health, are also participating.
