The newly appointed Deputy High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Major General Dauda Fred Alpha, has successfully completed his first diplomatic engagement by attending the 2nd Joint Consultative Meeting between the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) and the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) at the Ambassadorial Level, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from May 15–16, 2025.

The meeting aimed to strengthen strategic collaboration between ECOWAS and the African Union (AU) in promoting peace, security, good governance, and stability in West Africa and across the African continent.

The discussions were centered on the evolving governance, peace, and security landscapes in West Africa and the Sahel, with a focus on aligning efforts with both the AU Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture (EPSA).

During the event, both institutions reaffirmed their shared commitment to democratic governance, constitutionalism, and sustainable peace and security. The delegates also engaged in discussions regarding joint strategies to combat terrorism and violent extremism, while exploring ways to enhance institutional cooperation between the AU PSC and the ECOWAS MSC.

The meeting further focused on reviewing the implementation status of outcomes from the inaugural joint consultations. Both the AU and ECOWAS pledged to continue their close partnership in addressing Africa’s peace and security challenges through preventive diplomacy, mediation, and coordinated peace support operations.

This meeting marks the first official function that Deputy High Commissioner Major General Dauda Fred Alpha has participated in since assuming his duties on May 8, 2025. The high-profile event concluded with a joint communiqué reaffirming the shared responsibility of the AU and ECOWAS in addressing regional peace, governance, and security issues.

It also underscored the importance of tackling implementation challenges and drawing actionable lessons to guide future policymaking and execution.
