Republic of Korea to Inaugurate Embassy in Freetown
In a note verbale addressed to the Government of the Republic of Sierra Leone through the Sierra Leone High Commission in Nigeria, the Republic of Korea has officially announced its intention to upgrade its consulate in Freetown to the status of an embassy.
This significant step aligns with the Korean Government’s expressed commitment to enhancing its bilateral relations with Sierra Leone. Notably, President Julius Maada Bio and President Yoon Suk Yeol engaged in diplomatic discussions during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78) meeting in New York, paving the way for the establishment of the Korean Embassy in Freetown.
This development signifies a mutual desire to advance and strengthen diplomatic cooperation between the two nations. It will also alleviate the difficulties faced by Sierra Leonean citizens in obtaining visas for travel to Korea for business and official purposes.
Korea, a country considered as one of the world’s largest economies, initiated diplomatic ties with Sierra Leone on June 25, 1962.
