COVID-19 Regulations are designed to serve as safety measures and not intended to punish anyone

The United Nations World Health Organizations (WHO) has warned that the Delta Variant of COVID-19 is very deadly and has advised World Leaders, particularly in Africa, to be proactive in putting measures in place to protect their citizens.Today, the Delta Variant is gradually spreading across the globe and Sierra Leone is among other nations where the Delta Variant has been spotted. Therefore, it is the duty of any responsible government like the New Direction administration to put proper measures in place that will protect the lives of Sierra Leoneans.
President Julius Maada Bio being a caring, compassionate leader who always wants to ensure the safety and security of his citizens, has in consultation with the National COVID-19 Emergency Response Centre (NaCOVERC) re-introduced fresh regulations that are deemed fit to protect Sierra Leoneans. Those COVID-19 measures are not meant to punish Sierra Leoneans (as is being erroneously circulated by some irresponsible critics especially members of the opposition) but to be used as preventive mechanisms to break the chain of transmission. President Bio is a careful leader, whatever he does always falls within the confines of the law as enshrined in the country’s constitution. Chapter 2 of the 1991 constitution talks about fundamental principles of state policy and has a clear provision that gives the president the right to do what he has done. Section (b) of that provision states that “the security, peace and welfare of the people of Sierra Leone shall be the primary purpose and responsibility of Government, and to this end it shall be the duty of the Armed Forces, the police, public officers and all security agents to protect and safeguard the people of Sierra Leone”. Global statistics shows that the rate of infection of COVID-19 is on the increase and many countries in the world are still enforcing measures to combat its spread. Those who are criticising must always try to get themselves educated on how states are governed. People have every right to criticize but their criticism should not be used merely as an instrument for political distraction. “Do what you feel in your own heart to be right-for you’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t”-Eleanor Roosevelt.
According to the World Health Organization, Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus “Delta Variant has been detected in 98 countries and is spreading quickly in countries with low and high vaccination coverage”. The variant is becoming very dominant in some countries. Recently also, the Ghana Health Service confirmed that 136 students have been tested positive of the Delta Variant in Ghana. So go on president Bio, go ahead with your moves to protect the people of Sierra Leone from COVID-19. The Delta variant is real and deadly. Sierra Leoneans please don’t fall for cheap propaganda from political detractors. Our lives matter. And it is only when we cooperate with the government and adhere to the COVID-19 regulations put in place by NaCOVERC for us to collectively fight this virus that we can hope to win the war!
