The Sierra Leone High Commission was established to strengthen Sierra Leone bilateral relationship with the Federal Government of Nigeria and six other accredited nations like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Niger, Benin, Cameroun, Angola and the Central Republic of Congo. Since its establishment, the Embassy has been a conduit of development opportunities for the West Africa Nation of Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone and Nigeria continue to enjoy very productive relationship. Sierra Leone relationship with Nigeria dates back to over four centuries. The relationship was further strengthened when Sierra Leone had a civil war and the involvement of Nigeria government was very instrumental and timely in deescalating and resolving the conflict which ended in 2002 during the presidency of late President Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabba and the late President General Sani Abacha of blessed memories.
At the multilateral level, the two countries continue to support each other, including the United Nations and other International Organizations. Sierra Leone and Nigeria have been supporting each other at several developmental fronts.
After the war, late President Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabba in a bid to rebrand the image of the country and create bilateral and multilateral relationship, established the Sierra Leone High Commission and appointed Ambassador Joe Christopher Blell as Head of Mission. This had continued even when government changes.
In 2018, after winning the Presidential election, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio in his wisdom demonstrated high level of leadership prowess to maintain the existing relationship between Nigeria and Sierra Leone by appointing Dr. Solomon Christopher Momoh Gembeh SR, as High Commissioner of the Sierra Leone High Commission and Miss Anna Moussa as Deputy High Commissioner. After serving as High Commissioner for the period of about three years, Dr. Solomon Christopher Gembeh was recently replaced by H. E. Rupert Davies to serve as the newly appointed Sierra Leone High Commissioner to Nigeria.
As part of it mandates as a High commission in Abuja- Nigeria is to move from the traditional way to diplomacy to a vigorous economic Diplomacy that will strategically position Sierra Leone and help revitalize or revamp the country’s economy and by extension enhance development through several investment opportunities.
